Applicable Conditions for WRTR1000 Circulation Methods Beyond Mud Direct Circulation

Date:2026-10-13 12:13:11Views:23

The public documentation for the WRTR1000 states that the machine supports mud direct circulation, air foam, DTH hammer, and optional air-lift reverse circulation, and can switch between these methods based on formation conditions. This sentence can easily be misread as the equipment having a ready-to-use process menu. However, from the parameter table, only the mud direct circulation path has its supporting equipment specified along with the complete machine—BW1200/7 mud pump, maximum pressure 7 MPa, displacement 1200 L/min. For air foam, DTH, and air-lift reverse circulation, the documentation only indicates the applicable direction without specifying the corresponding air compressor, foam injection, or dual-wall drill pipe configuration. This article distinguishes these four items one by one: which conditions are documented and which need to be separately implemented at the project level.

First, distinguish which category these four configurations belong to

Mud direct circulation, air foam, DTH hammer, and air-lift reverse circulation do not hold the same status in the documentation. Mud direct circulation is one of the circulation methods listed with the machine, and the pump model and parameters can be directly checked; DTH and air foam are described as switchable drilling methods; air-lift reverse circulation is explicitly marked as "optional." These three levels of description correspond to three different procurement and preparation states.

  • Mud direct circulation: The machine includes a BW1200/7 mud pump with clear parameters.
  • Air foam: The documentation describes it as a process direction that can be switched according to formation, without listing supporting equipment and medium parameters.
  • DTH hammer: The documentation states that a suitable air compressor, DTH hammer, and drill bit are required, none of which are in the machine parameter table.
  • Air-lift reverse circulation: The documentation explicitly marks it as an optional drilling method and states that the machine is not a dedicated RC exploration rig.

Applicable scope of mud direct circulation and its built-in conditions

According to the documentation, clay, silt, and other soft formations are suitable for mud direct circulation, using mud properties to stabilize the borehole wall and carry cuttings back to the surface; in deep-hole mud direct circulation, the pump handles cuttings transport, wall protection, drill bit cooling, and downhole pressure control. These supporting conditions are closed within the machine parameters: the 25 kN·m rotary table provides four speeds of 37 / 52 / 84 / 145 r/min, and the BW1200/7 handles circulation.

The documentation also states the limitations of this path itself: in clay layers, prevent bit balling and poor return flow; in loose sand and gravel layers, collapse, mud loss, and hole enlargement are likely, possibly requiring temporary casing or staged casing. In other words, the formations that mud direct circulation can cover are limited, and only beyond that do the other methods come into play.

After entering weathered rock and intact bedrock, where is the switch point between the two methods

The documentation is relatively restrained on this section: after entering strongly weathered or decomposed rock, rotary drilling can continue based on bottom resistance and return flow conditions, or air foam or other suitable processes can be used; after entering relatively intact hard rock, a suitable air compressor, DTH hammer, and drill bit can be configured for DTH drilling.

The judgment basis here is written downhole—bottom resistance and return flow conditions—rather than drawn by depth values. Conversely, the DTH item depends most heavily on equipment outside the machine. The documentation explicitly notes: in deep hard rock holes, special attention should be paid to air compressor capacity, DTH hammer lubrication, and cuttings discharge status; if rock powder at the bottom cannot be discharged in time, drilling efficiency will be significantly reduced. The pressure and displacement of the air compressor are not in the WRTR1000 parameter table and need to be configured separately for the project.

Air foam and air-lift reverse circulation, what links are each constrained by

Air foam is positioned in the documentation for "hole sections that are partially dry, lost, or require improved cuttings carrying capacity." The common point of such hole sections is that they are not suitable for maintaining circulation with a single mud system. The documentation also states that foam concentration, air volume, and injection method should be adjusted according to hole depth, hole diameter, and formation permeability, and cannot be covered by uniform parameters for all formations. The practical implication of this constraint is: air foam is not a fixed configuration once installed, but a set of field parameters that vary with the hole section.

The nature of air-lift reverse circulation is different. The documentation states it is used for projects requiring rapid cuttings return or cuttings sampling, and explicitly states that the machine is not a dedicated RC exploration rig; if the project has clear requirements for sample representativeness and splitting quality, matching dual-wall drill pipes, air compressor system, and sampling equipment should also be configured. These three supporting equipment items are directly related to sampling quality but are not in the machine parameter table.

One machine using multiple methods relies on the shared foundation of the rotary table and mast

The reason these four items can be installed on the same machine is that the rock breaking and lifting stages are shared. The 25 kN·m rotary table provides four speeds of 37 / 52 / 84 / 145 r/min; low speed and high torque are suitable for large drilling tools, casing operations, and high-resistance formations, while higher speeds are suitable for relatively stable soft rock, weathered layers, and some sedimentary formations; the 60 T hydraulic telescopic K-type mast, 90 kN main winch, and 50 kN auxiliary winch handle drill string and casing operations; the 660 mm rotary table through-hole leaves space for large-size drilling tools and casing. Changing the circulation method changes the downhole medium and cuttings discharge path, but the drill string handling and lifting stages still use the same mechanism.

For this reason, the approach given in the documentation for mixed formation scenarios is to combine multiple methods: use mud circulation plus casing protection in the upper loose layer, then switch to DTH or air foam after entering rock, reducing the need to frequently change rigs due to a single process not adapting to formation changes. However, "can be combined" and "can be switched at will" are two different things; the switch point is still judged by bottom resistance and return flow conditions, not by a preset depth.

Parts that need separate confirmation before procurement

If the WRTR1000 circulation methods are considered as a selection comparison item, there are three types of information that cannot be found in the existing documentation and need to be separately confirmed with the supplier or project designer; no inference is made here:

  • What pressure and displacement of air compressor are required for air foam and air-lift reverse circulation respectively; the existing documentation does not give values.
  • The specifications of the dual-wall drill pipes selected for air-lift reverse circulation and how they connect with the machine's drill pipe system; the documentation only mentions "matching."
  • The type and consumption of foaming agent required for the air foam process; the documentation does not cover this.

The absence of these items does not affect a basic judgment: the applicable conditions for WRTR1000 circulation methods depend on the formation state of the target hole section and the supporting equipment the project can provide, not on a set of fixed depth boundaries given by the equipment itself. The boundary of mud direct circulation is written in soft formations and collapse risk; DTH and air foam shift the conditions to air compressor and foam parameters; air-lift reverse circulation shifts the conditions to dual-wall drill pipes and sampling equipment. These four types of conditions fall under different responsible parties and need to be matched item by item during the procurement stage.
